Big-game fishing, also known as offshore sportfishing, offshore game fishing or blue-water fishing, is a form of recreational fishing targeting large game fish.
Blue Reef Island is located close to the middle section of the famous Belize Barrier Reef, the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world and the largest in the northern hemisphere!
At Blue Reef Island we troll the outer reef targeting wahoo, tuna, dorado (aka mahi mahi), giant barracudas, kingfish, amberjacks, sharks, snappers and groupers. Pelagic billfish such as blue marlin and sailfish are targeted in the deeper waters outside of the Belize Barrier Reef.
The fishing is diverse! There is great fishing throughout the year, and plenty of fish for the table at the end of the day!
For fly-fishing enthusiasts, we are located in the premier area of Belize. There is a chance for a grand slam! Bonefish, permit and tarpon are located in the flats around the island
There's no bad time to come to Belize! What people love about our Blue Reef Island trips is the variety of fishing. Our fishing grounds are close to the island. Guests get to choose! Some people want to relax and fish a couple of hours then chill out on a hammock with a cocktail, while others want to fish intensely for the entire trip. Or, couples may have different agendas. One person wishes to fish all the time while the other prefers fish and also relax. The surrounding reef is world-class for snorkelling and scuba diving.
The Blue Reef Professional Guides have fished the Belizean waters their entire lives, and they know how to find and catch the variety of species that roam our waters. And, it’s not all about fishing! Whilst trolling the Belizean Barrier Reef and beyond, whale sharks, sperm whales, pilot whales, and dolphins are often sighted.
Blue Reef are well-known as experts for wahoo fishing. For those who love to catch wahoo, lots of them and big ones, try to book a trip during our wahoo season. The best months are November, December and January.
If you are looking to catch lots of billfish such as marlins and sailfish, it\'s worth noting that the Caribbean waters are not like the Pacific Ocean. We do catch billfish, and we have several billfish tournaments during July, September and October. However, you will not catch the great numbers of billfish that you catch from the Pacific areas such as Costa Rica, Cabo San Lucas and Panama.
There's not a bad time to fish in Belize!
